Social media engagement and competitions are attracting a new generation of travelers and building brand loyalty.

It's all about engaging audiences these days, and competitions, freebies and social media can do just that.

An ongoing competition at Yotel in New York City is a great example. The challenge? While the hotel builds a new club lounge, it is inviting guests and the general public to build their own Lego masterpiece on the 30-foot (9-meter) wall that's doubling as a fun art installation while shielding construction from public areas.

Guests can snap a photo using Instagram and the hashtag #MyLegoMasterpiece, and photos with the most likes will win prizes.

Another great hotel competition I've seen? In 2011 the Art Series Hotel Group, which dedicates each of its boutique hotels to a celebrated Australian artist, challenged its guests to steal an authentic Banksy masterpiece.

Tips on the piece’s whereabouts were leaked using social media, and those who successfully stole the piece got to keep it!

What hotel competitions have sparked your interest? Please share!”
